São Paulo LGBTQ+ guide

Gay and LGBTQ+ life in São Paulo

Gay and LGBTQ+ life in São Paulo rests on national court rulings, local anti-discrimination laws and free city services. Same-sex couples have married nationwide since 2013, homophobia has been punished under the racism law since 2019, and same-sex partners qualify for family-reunion residence. Violence and dating-app robberies are the risks to plan around. The next Pride parade is set for May 30, 2027, on Avenida Paulista.

Is São Paulo LGBT friendly?

Yes, in law and in public services, with real safety caveats. Gay São Paulo has the legal protection of the whole country plus its own state and city anti-discrimination laws.

Same-sex unions have been recognized since 2011 and marriage since 2013. State and city laws penalize businesses that discriminate. The UK and Canadian governments both say big cities are more accepting than the rest of Brazil.1 3 15 16 44 45

Visibility is growing. Citing IBGE census data, Agência Brasil reports that same-sex couples living together rose from about 58,000 in 2010 to about 480,000 in 2022. Of those couples in 2022, 58% were female couples and 77.6% lived in a consensual union rather than a civil marriage.1

In the October 2026 election, São Paulo state re-elected trans federal deputy Erika Hilton and elected Sofia Favero to the state assembly. ANTRA counted 116 trans candidacies nationwide. These are results reported the day after the vote, before official certification.18

The downsides are real. Marriage rests on judicial rulings rather than a law passed by Congress. Violence remains a risk, as the figures below and our guide to safety in São Paulo show.1 44

LGBT rights in Brazil

Most rights come from Supreme Court (STF) rulings and National Justice Council (CNJ) rules that bind every registry office in the country.

Same-sex marriage in Brazil

Registry offices must marry same-sex couples and convert their stable unions into marriages. A registrar who refuses must be reported to the supervising judge. A bill to prohibit same-sex marriage passed a Chamber of Deputies committee in 2023 but has not become law.1 2 7

Registering a stable union as a foreign couple

Unmarried couples can register a stable union (união estável) by court ruling, by a public deed at a notary, or by a joint statement at a civil registry office. Registration is optional but makes the union effective against third parties. The CNJ rules expressly cover same-sex couples.8

  • CPF first. The registry entry must include each partner's CPF, Brazil's taxpayer number.
  • Fee. Until each state sets its own fee, a registry statement costs 50% of the fee for a marriage application.
  • Foreign documents. A stable-union document made abroad can be registered only if one partner is Brazilian and Brazilian law treats it as equivalent. Otherwise, make a new Brazilian declaration.

Protection from discrimination in São Paulo

State Law 10.948/2001 penalizes discrimination against gay, bisexual or trans people. Examples include refusing a hotel stay or rental, or banning displays of affection allowed to others. Penalties run from fines of 1,000 UFESP to suspending or revoking a business license.15

City Law 17.301 of 2020 adds sanctions covering rentals, hiring, school enrollment and access to buses, metro, trains and taxis. That matters when you look for an apartment to rent. Under the 2019 STF ruling, a homicide motivated by homophobia or transphobia counts as an aggravated crime. Religious speech is protected unless it becomes hate speech.4 16

Transgender rights in Brazil

Since 2018, trans Brazilians 18 and over can change name and gender at a registry office by self-declaration, with no surgery, hormones or medical report. CNJ rules from 2023 extended this to naturalized citizens and to filing at consulates abroad. Foreign residents can't use this route, but they can have their social name added to immigrant documents.5 7 9 11

Same-sex parents who have a child through assisted reproduction are both named on the birth record, with no court order. For schools and family life, see raising kids in São Paulo.7

São Paulo Pride 2027 dates, route and crowds

São Paulo Pride (Parada do Orgulho LGBT+) is usually held on the Sunday after Corpus Christi. The 31st parade is scheduled for May 30, 2027, from 10am on Avenida Paulista, with the Feira Cultural da Diversidade on May 27.

The 2023 parade had 19 sound trucks (trios elétricos). In 2026 sponsor revenue fell about 60%. The Cebrap-USP figure covers the crowd on Paulista only.

Sources 19 21 22 26

The 2026 route ran along Paulista and down Rua da Consolação to Praça da República. The parade grew from a small gathering at Praça Roosevelt in 1996. Its first march on Paulista in 1997 drew about 2,000 people, per the organizers.20 22

The diversity fair runs separately. In 2026 it was held on June 4 in the Vale do Anhangabaú from 10am to 10pm. It had 60 tents of small businesses, and entry was free with a Sympla reservation.23

Two changes are worth watching. The Marcha do Orgulho Trans didn't take place in 2026 after its organizer stepped down. And in May 2026 the City Council approved on first reading a bill to bar minors from LGBTQIA+ events and keep them off public streets. As of late May it still needed a second vote, and jurists called it unconstitutional.24 25

Gay neighborhoods and bars in São Paulo

LGBT friendly neighborhoods to live in

No official source rates São Paulo neighborhoods as LGBT friendly. City and state anti-discrimination laws apply everywhere in the city, including to landlords. Living in Consolação puts you on Rua Augusta, which our neighborhood scores rate 3 of 3 for nightlife and 0 for quiet.15 16

Is Brazil safe for gay travelers and residents?

Same-sex relations are legal, but Canada notes that LGBTQ people in Brazil have suffered serious assaults. It adds that public affection is more accepted in big cities than elsewhere.

Dating apps and drink spiking

The UK FCDO says criminals have used dating apps to target foreigners for drink spiking, robbery and bank account theft. The US advisory warns that criminals target foreigners through dating apps or at bars, then drug and rob them. Canada reports spiking in crowded São Paulo bars and advises ordering sealed bottles or cans. It also warns of romance scams on dating sites and advises caution when meeting people from them.44 45 48

Can same-sex partners get a family visa for Brazil?

Yes. Brazil's LGBT family visa is the ordinary family-reunion visa. The Migration Law grants it to the spouse or partner of a Brazilian or resident immigrant without any discrimination, so same-sex couples qualify, married or not.

  1. Check the sponsor

Your partner must be Brazilian or hold residence. You can file at the same time, but your permit is granted only after the sponsor's. Holders of family-reunion or provisional residence can't sponsor.

  2. Prove the relationship

Use a marriage certificate or a stable-union certificate from an authority or court. Otherwise, bring a registry document, sworn statements from two people and one item such as a joint bank account or lease.

  3. Register on arrival

The visa is valid for up to one year. Register with the Polícia Federal within 90 days of entering Brazil.

  4. Work and stay

You can work on equal terms with Brazilians. After four years you can get indefinite residence in your own right, even if the relationship ends, with proof of support and a clean record.

Documents for a residence application

  • The online application form, two 3x4 photos and your passport or ID
  • Fee receipts
  • Criminal records from every place you lived in the last five years, plus a no-record declaration
  • A marriage certificate or proof of stable union, and a joint declaration that you live together
  • Your sponsor's ID and a declaration that the sponsor lives in Brazil

Source 13

Spouses or partners of Brazilians, if not separated and able to communicate in Portuguese, can apply for naturalization after one year of residence instead of four. Only indefinite-term residence counts toward that time. Document rules depend on your case, so confirm them with the Polícia Federal or an immigration lawyer. City programs for trans residents

Five mobile units hold name and gender rectification drives at squares, parks and events. The Respeito Tem Nome program pays registry fees for name and gender changes. Trans people qualify with 2 or more years in the city, no income for 6 months and a vulnerability factor, which can include being an immigrant or refugee. Applications go through the reference centers.31 32

Transcidadania offers 750 places to trans and travesti residents in vulnerable situations. It pays R$1,702.05 a month (about US$341) for 30 hours a week of study and training over 36 months. Applicants must be 18 or over, live in the city, be unemployed, be enrolled in education and have family income of at most one minimum wage per person. Gay expats in São Paulo, first steps after arrival

Legal residence and a CPF open most of the services on this page. Work through these steps in order.

  1. Secure residence

Partners of Brazilians or residents can use family reunion. Register with the Polícia Federal within 90 days of arrival.

  2. Get a CPF

You need it to register a stable union and to link your record at a public health unit.

  3. Register your union

If you're not married, a stable-union record at a registry office makes your partnership effective against third parties.

  4. Join the public health system

Register at your local UBS. PrEP and PEP are free at testing centers and through the SPrEP app channel.

  5. Add your social name

If your name differs from your passport, ask for your social name on your immigrant documents.
