The short answer

Moving to Argentina starts with your legal route, reliable access to income and healthcare. Buenos Aires offers a large city routine with public transport, culture and a wide choice of neighborhoods. Other Argentine cities need their own cost and service checks. Use the country rules to establish how you can stay, then choose housing around your job, school and medical needs.

  • Confirm your residence route before making a long housing commitment.
  • Use ARS pesos for bills and compare dollar costs at a dated exchange rate.
  • Buenos Aires has 10 neighborhood guides to compare before you choose a lease.
  • Keep healthcare and school arrangements ahead of the housing decision.

Is Argentina a good country to move to?

Choose the residence route first

Tourist entry is only the starting point. The consulate guidance permits US citizens to visit for up to 90 days without a tourist visa. A job, pension, family connection or regional nationality can raise a different residence question. Read Argentina visas and residency for the official routes and documents.2

Do not assume a successful tourism visit proves a workable long-term move. Check the authority's requirements for the status you want, including documents you must obtain abroad. Keep a copy of every submission and permission. Record deadlines instead of relying on a remembered conversation.

Plan in pesos and pay attention to the exchange

Argentina uses pesos. The Buenos Aires pages convert local figures at the BCRA reference rate of ARS 1,515.50 per US dollar on October 8, 2026. This lets readers compare figures consistently. The bank, card or transfer service you use can produce a different result after exchange costs.5

The Buenos Aires cost guide gives household models, and the rental guide explains separate housing expenses. Do not reuse that city budget for Córdoba, Mendoza or Bariloche. A smaller city can change transport, housing, school and healthcare choices in different directions.

Build your Buenos Aires budget

Build a monthly planning range from dated city asking rents, official household baskets and provider prices.

These are derived planning estimates. Home sizes, consumption multipliers and upper buffers are assumptions. Save this budget to My Area

You'll sign in with Google and review the amounts before they're saved.

Ask how rent is set and adjusted, which expenses are separate and how payments are documented. Currency matters as much as the headline amount. A monthly budget should also carry reserves for healthcare, travel, administration and interruption to income.

Start with Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires is Argentina's capital and an autonomous city. It is separate from Buenos Aires Province. Keep that distinction when you choose an address, compare crime data or look for a public service. The definitive 2022 census counted 3,121,707 residents inside CABA.1,4

Córdoba, Rosario, Mendoza, Salta and Bariloche offer other kinds of routines. They are candidates for separate guides, not interchangeable versions of Buenos Aires. Confirm the actual work, healthcare and school options before ranking them by an unsourced national cost estimate.

Compare Buenos Aires with Montevideo for a smaller waterfront setting, or with Santiago for drier normal summers.

Healthcare rules depend on status and jurisdiction

Confirm coverage with the provider you will use. National and Buenos Aires city rules differ, and residence status affects access and payment. The healthcare guide names the current instruments and provider checks. A broad claim that every foreign visitor receives every service free would mislead you.6,7

Ask an insurer or hospital about admission, emergency cover, medicines, waiting periods and preexisting conditions. A directory proves a provider exists. It does not prove a clinician is available in your language or that a plan covers your case. Keep the written answers with the move documents.

Put schools and the weekday route before housing

Read international schools before choosing an apartment. Compare actual campuses, places, calendars and all fees. Some school choices require travel outside CABA. Then read family life and test the journey at the time your household will use it.8,9

Plan a document checklist for each person. A child's school enrollment and a parent's residence application answer separate questions. Keep apostilles and translations aligned with the requirements of the authority or institution requesting them.

Make Spanish part of the move

Study BA lists a language and culture course built around the Río de la Plata region. Use classes alongside ordinary tasks such as shopping, asking for repairs and reading bills. A legal translator and a language class serve different purposes. Choose the qualified professional the official process requires.3

DNI
National identity document. The residence process determines when and how you obtain it.
Radicación
The residence application or status process.
Expensas
Building expenses alongside rent.
Comuna
A local administrative unit in Buenos Aires city.

A useful order for the move

  1. Check the route

Read the current official entry and residence requirements for every passport in the household.

  2. Secure the essentials

Confirm income access, healthcare, employer permission and any school place.

  3. Make a flexible first visit

Use temporary housing and test the normal weekly routine.

  4. Quote the full housing cost

Compare rent, adjustments, building expenses, utilities and initial payments.

  5. Finish administration

Follow the route-specific deadlines and retain documentary evidence.

The Buenos Aires moving checklist puts local tasks in order. Use it after the national residence decision, then replace planning estimates with actual bills and receipts.

Questions people ask

Is Argentina a good country to move to?

It can be, when you can verify residence, income access and healthcare before arrival. The strongest choice matches a specific city to a household routine. A countrywide affordability slogan is a weak basis for a long-term move.

Where should I start when planning a move to Argentina?

Start with the immigration route and the household's reliable income. Confirm healthcare and any school place next. Choose housing after you know the regular destinations.

Can a US citizen visit Argentina without a visa?

The Argentine consulate guidance permits a tourism visit of up to 90 days without a tourist visa. Other purposes and longer stays need separate checks. The visas page links the current official route information.

Does buying an apartment give Argentine residence?

Do not assume it does. Property ownership and immigration permission are separate questions. Confirm the residence route before treating a purchase as a settlement plan.

Are costs the same throughout Argentina?

No. Buenos Aires housing and household models describe one city. A regional move needs its own service, transport and rental evidence. Quote comparable homes before deciding which place costs less.

Will every Argentine hospital apply the same rule to a foreign resident?

No. Jurisdiction and residence status matter. Ask the actual provider and read the current healthcare guide. National rules should not be treated as a promise about every city facility.

Can I move to Argentina with children?

Plan each family member's immigration documents and school needs. Confirm campus, availability and fees before selecting housing. A school place does not itself decide residence permission.

Should I speak Spanish before moving to Argentina?

Build practical Spanish as early as you can. Housing, bills and administration are easier when you can understand them. Use qualified translation for the official documents that require it.
