Argentina relocation rules
Moving to Argentina with a dog or cat
Plan the official veterinary certificate backward from the travel date, then confirm the airline and return route separately.

The short answer
SENASA requires an international veterinary certificate or a validated official pet passport for domestic dogs and cats entering Argentina. Certificate language, rabies validity, health examination and parasite treatment all matter. The first rabies vaccination must precede entry by at least twenty-one days. Certificate validity is sixty days while rabies protection remains current. Airline acceptance and return-country requirements are separate. Confirm the travel mode before treating one document as permission for the whole journey.
- Use an official CVI or validated pet passport.
- The first rabies dose needs at least twenty-one days before entry.
- The health and parasite windows run before certificate issuance.
- Airline and return-trip rules need separate confirmation.
Choose the official document route
The CVI must be issued, signed and stamped by the veterinary authority of the origin or departure country. One CVI language must be Spanish. A validated official pet passport must contain the required health information and receive official endorsement before departure. SENASA accepts English as the passport alternate language.1
| Requirement | Clock | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Health certificate | Within ten days before CVI issuance | Authorized veterinarian and fitness for travel |
| Internal and external parasite treatment | Within fifteen days before CVI issuance or passport endorsement | Approved veterinary products |
| First rabies vaccination | At least twenty-one days before entry | Protection remains valid at entry |
| CVI or officially validated passport | Sixty days from issue or validation | Rabies vaccination still valid at entry |

Accompanied travel and cargo have different steps
For accompanied pets traveling in the same transport as their guardian, SENASA describes a border document, physical and identity check. Its guidance does not require the owner to make the listed prior import or border intervention applications. Airline cabin and hold acceptance remain separate.1
For cargo, including a pet dispatched without its guardian in the same transport, SENASA describes advance notice or an intervention request. The page references twenty-four business hours. Ask the entry post to confirm the required notice deadline for your shipment and cargo handler.1
Use paperwork for the household file and visas for human entry. Banking helps organize payments. This page does not price the airline charge, cargo handling or a veterinarian appointment.
Plan the return trip before departure
SENASA says return travel normally needs a new CVI with the destination requirements. An incoming CVI can cover a return only when it expressly includes that use, the permitted time and remaining validity. An officially validated passport can remain valid when its certified rabies vaccination remains current. Check the return country requirements separately.1
A national entry certificate does not establish that your chosen apartment accepts pets. Use the Buenos Aires rental guide to structure a property check. City pet guides must verify nearby veterinary and practical options.
Keep health cover, driving documents and tax records in their own files. The pet certificate answers an animal-entry question.

Questions people ask
Which animals does this SENASA checklist cover?
It covers domestic dogs and cats. Other species, commercial circumstances and transit routes require their own official requirements.
Does the CVI need Spanish?
Yes. SENASA requires Spanish as one of the CVI languages. A validated official passport has a separately described English alternative.
Can an ordinary unsigned pet passport replace the CVI?
The alternative must be an official passport with the required health information and official validation before departure. Do not assume an unendorsed booklet qualifies.
How long before entry must the first rabies dose be given?
SENASA lists at least twenty-one days for animals vaccinated for the first time. Vaccination must remain valid at entry.
When must the health certificate be issued?
Within ten days before the CVI issue date. Use the certificate clock, rather than assuming every deadline runs from the flight.
When must parasite treatment occur?
Within fifteen days before CVI issuance or official passport intervention, using approved veterinary products.
How long is the entry document valid?
SENASA describes sixty days from issue or validation, provided rabies vaccination remains current on entry.
Are young animals or rabies-free origins automatic exceptions?
No. SENASA describes conditions requiring certification by the official veterinary authority. Have the authority confirm the applicable exception.
Does the certificate guarantee airline acceptance?
No. Confirm the airline route, animal, carrier and booking conditions separately. No airline approval is established here.
Can I use the same CVI for the return trip?
Only under the conditions SENASA specifies for an expressly valid return document. Otherwise a new CVI is needed. Check the destination country as well.
