The short answer
US citizens can visit Argentina for tourism or a family visit for up to 90 days without a visa, according to the current New York consulate guidance. A longer move needs an appropriate residence category. Eligible regional nationals have a two-year temporary route. Qualifying digital nomads have up to 180 days of transitory residence. Pensionado, rentista and salaried worker applications follow separate evidence and current in-country processes.
- US tourist and family visitors can enter visa-free for up to 90 days, subject to admission checks.
- Eligible MERCOSUR nationality residence lasts up to two renewable years.
- The nomad category grants up to 180 days, renewable once for an equal term.
- The pensionado and rentista income floor is five SMVM, equal to US$1,291 (ARS 1,956,000) in October 2026.
Which Argentina route fits a relocation?
This page covers Argentine national immigration rules. The Buenos Aires guide adds city housing and daily costs. Read remote work, retirement or jobs for the move that matches your activity. Neither rent nor a city registration replaces national residence authorization.
| Route | Who it concerns | Current period | Application distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| MERCOSUR nationality | Eligible native nationals, plus narrower naturalized cases | Up to 2 years, renewable | Current in-country RaDEX temporary route |
| Digital nomad | Visa-exempt nationals, remote overseas clients | Up to 180 days, one equal renewal | Current in-country presencial route, not RaDEX |
| Pensionado | Regular permanent overseas pension | 1 year, renewable in-country | Proof of qualifying payer and five SMVM |
| Rentista | Qualifying passive asset benefits from abroad | 1 year, renewable in-country | Personal work pay excluded, authorized fund transfer |
| Salaried worker | Qualifying local employment and employer | 1 year, renewable in-country | Certified pre-contract and employer registrations |
Short visits and passports
US nationals do not need a visa for tourism, a family visit or transit for up to 90 days under the current New York consulate guidance. The checked consular exemption list also includes Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom. Confirm the exact passport and purpose with the Argentine consulate before departure.13,
DNM's tourist guidance defines tourism as rest or leisure and says tourists cannot perform paid tasks. It describes an authorized stay of up to three months, extendable for a similar period. The actual authorization and extension process matter. Do not build residence around repeated exits and an assumed automatic new stamp.14
Applicants who need a tourist visa use the consular process. The Foreign Ministry lists passport validity of at least six months at entry, a blank page, photographs, the application and financial evidence among its requirements. Nationality-specific exemptions and electronic authorizations can differ. This page does not turn US residence into universal visa-free eligibility.16
The declaration wording and implementation condition come from DNU 366/2025 Articles 9 and 33. The healthcare guide separately distinguishes hospital and jurisdiction rules. Admission, insurance and hospital charging are related questions with different legal sources.11
Residence by eligible nationality
Ley 25.871 Article 23(l), DNM 1637/2022 and the current service page list native nationals of Uruguay, Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana and Suriname. The maximum grant is two renewable years with multiple entries and exits. Merely living in one of those countries does not make you eligible by nationality.6
Naturalized applicants have a narrower country list and need at least five years of that nationality. Check birthplace and naturalization date against the current DNM page. Minors need the prescribed birth record and parental or guardian documentation. The category still requires identity, regular entry, address and the relevant criminal certificates.6
Transitory residence for overseas remote work
DNM 758/2022 Article 1 permits up to 180 days for visa-exempt nationals providing remote services to overseas people or entities. It does not establish a fixed dollar income floor in the checked text. Article 3 permits one equal-term extension, requiring at least half the original period inside Argentina plus the renewal evidence.3
The current in-country service page asks for work evidence, a CV and an occupational reference, alongside identity, address, regular entry and the Argentine criminal record over age 16. It explicitly directs applicants to a presencial process instead of RaDEX. Follow its current CABA contact instructions.2
Use the coworking guide and cost guide to test the practical stay. A good connection and budget cannot change the permit's overseas-client scope or renewal conditions.
Pensionado and rentista income
Pensionado under Article 23(c) requires a regular permanent pension from a government, international organization or private company for overseas services. Rentista under Article 23(b) concerns passive asset benefits and excludes remuneration for personal work. Both current in-country pages list one renewable year.4,
| Calculation | US dollars | In pesos |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly full-time SMVM | US$258 | ARS 391,200 |
| Five times October SMVM | US$1,291 | ARS 1,956,000 |
Rentista applicants must show qualifying asset income and funds entering through BCRA-authorized institutions. Pension applicants need the paying institution's certificate. The advance entry permit has a different consular sequence and says up to three years. Its page misprints the amendment number. The verified primary amendment is DNM 3446/2023.4,
Salaried employment and employer evidence
The worker category is Article 23(a). The current process asks for a certified pre-contract specifying duties, hours, term, location, pay and employer CUIT. The employer needs ARCA and foreign-requirer registration. Early employment registration must be presented within 30 calendar days of starting the residence application. The current grant is one renewable year.7
Review the offer against Buenos Aires pay and jobs. The minimum wage is a legal floor, not a promise that local pay covers an independent rental. If a professional license or recognized qualification is necessary for the role, check that separately before accepting.
Documents and application sequence
Choose the exact route
Match nationality, income type and planned activity to the current DNM service page.
Collect civil and criminal records
Check the required foreign records, apostille or legalization, Spanish translation and any family documents before traveling.
Document legal entry and address
Keep identity and entry records and arrange the requested address evidence.
Use the correct application channel
Temporary routes described here use current RaDEX instructions. The in-country nomad route expressly does not.
Check fees and attend the appointment
Use the current authority payment instructions and appointment notice. No current fee schedule was independently extracted for this guide.
Keep renewal evidence
Record travel, work or pension evidence and grant dates. Conditions follow the actual authorization.
For the temporary routes, current service pages request foreign criminal certificates for countries where applicants over 16 lived more than one year during the last three years. Argentine criminal checks are integrated in RaDEX. Nomad is a separate route. Confirm legalization and translation requirements for each document, rather than ordering an undifferentiated bundle.2,
Use the moving checklist to sequence arrival and the family guide for children's practical needs. The legal application still follows DNM's requested evidence.
Residence permission is not a tax ruling
Argentina's income tax law treats immigration and tax as separate questions. Article 1 taxes residents on worldwide income. Current Article 116(b) covers foreign permanent residents and twelve months with authorized temporary stays. It also allows a nonhabitual-stay exception subject to proof. A transitory nomad permit does not establish the answer by itself. Ask an Argentine accountant to check source, status, treaty and home-country obligations.10
A five-SMVM legal threshold is not the amount your household needs to live. Compare US$1,500, US$2,500 and US$4,000 with actual insurance and housing quotes. Keep application fees and arrival funds separate. Dollar equivalents use ARS 1,515.50 per US dollar from the BCRA on October 8, 2026. Your payment provider can use another rate.1
The Argentina country guide connects residence rules with the household, healthcare and city decisions that follow.
Questions people ask
Do US citizens need an Argentina tourist visa?
Current Argentine New York consulate guidance says US nationals can visit for tourism or a family visit for up to 90 days without a visa. Admission and the actual authorized period still depend on entry checks.
Are Canadian, Australian and British tourists on the exemption list?
The checked consular tourist exemption list includes Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom. Confirm the passport type, purpose and current instructions with the relevant Argentine consulate before traveling.
Can a tourist perform paid work in Argentina?
DNM's tourist guidance says a tourist cannot perform paid tasks. Choose the remote-work or other qualifying residence route for the actual activity. Tourist entry and work permission are different.
What is Argentina's regional nationality residence term?
The eligible MERCOSUR nationality category lists a maximum of two renewable years. Native nationals and naturalized applicants have different eligibility lists and conditions.
Can I apply by MERCOSUR nationality just because I live in Brazil?
Residence in Brazil alone does not establish nationality eligibility. DNM lists native eligible nationals and a separate narrower naturalized group with a five-year nationality condition. Check the passport and birthplace facts.
Is the income threshold the same for rentista and pensionado?
Both use five SMVM under the amended DNM 3446/2023 text. October 1, 2026's wage makes the threshold US$1,291 (ARS 1,956,000). The qualifying income source differs between passive assets and a pension.
Can a foreign salary qualify as passive rentista income?
The current rentista service page excludes remuneration for personal work. Do not present a salary as passive asset benefits. Assess the nomad, worker or other appropriate category instead.
Do all in-country residence routes use RaDEX?
No. The current temporary categories described here use RaDEX, while the digital nomad service page expressly requires a presencial process instead. Use the page for your exact category.
Which overseas criminal certificates do the temporary routes request?
Current service pages request certificates from countries where applicants over 16 lived for more than one year during the last three years. Argentine criminal checks are integrated in RaDEX for those temporary routes.
Is the new health-insurance declaration already enforceable at every border?
The enacted Article 34 requirement is subject to Article 123 bis, which makes the declaration enforceable once implementation is regulated. This research did not verify that regulation or daily enforcement. Check current official entry instructions.
Does the guide verify current residence application fees?
No current fee schedule was independently extracted. Obtain the applicable fee from DNM or the consulate for your nationality and route. The blank cost fields on some service pages do not establish a free application.
Does immigration residence automatically decide income tax residence?
No. Current income tax Articles 1 and 116 apply separate tests and qualifications. Ask a qualified professional to assess your income source, habitual stay, category, treaty and home-country rules.
