The short answer

Buenos Aires is a substantial service labor market, but newcomers should secure a concrete offer before relying on local pay. The city survey recorded 7.2% unemployment and 10.2% underemployment in Q2 2026. October's full-time national minimum wage is US$258 (ARS 391,200), far below the single renter core model. Eligible regional nationals and employer-supported workers have different residence routes. Compare take-home pay, registration and housing before accepting.

  • CABA unemployment is 7.2% and underemployment 10.2% in Q2 2026.
  • The full-time October minimum wage is US$258 (ARS 391,200), a legal floor rather than typical professional pay.
  • Services and commerce account for 88.0% of occupied city residents in the survey.
  • The worker residence process lists one renewable year and requires employer registration and contract evidence.

Is Buenos Aires a good place to find local work?

Choose the job and legal route before the apartment. The cost guide establishes the spending test. Argentina visas distinguishes the residence routes. Remote work is a separate option for overseas clients. Foreign income and local salaried work require different checks.

The survey counts CABA residents, including those who can work elsewhere. It does not count every metropolitan job or every opening in the city. Existing sector employment helps define where work is concentrated. It cannot establish how many employers will recruit a newcomer this month.8

The report says 74.3% of occupied residents are salaried and 21.2% work for themselves. Among salaried residents, 73.5% have employer pension withholding. Another 10.2% contribute themselves. The 16.3% with no registration is the relevant unregistered figure. Do not label the whole 26.5% without employer withholding unregistered.8

The unemployment rate uses the economically active population. The employment rate uses a different reference population. This guide avoids converting either into your personal hiring probability. Your role, language, credentials and work authorization will matter more than a city-wide average.

The minimum is not a suitable estimate for an experienced professional salary. It is a warning against funding an independent rental move from the legal floor. This research did not verify current occupation-specific salary bands, so it does not publish invented technology, teaching or hospitality averages.

  • Ask for gross pay, expected net pay, currency, payroll frequency and the applicable collective agreement.
  • Ask how salary revisions work. Compare them with the apartment's separate rent adjustment schedule.
  • Confirm registration, pension contributions, health arrangements and any probation or contract term.
  • Identify which relocation and residence costs the employer pays in writing.
  • Use the complete household cost, including tax and health cover, before accepting the offer.

The US$1,500 and US$2,500 pages show the remaining balance after modeled costs. They are spending scenarios, not recommended salary bands. Check rent and healthcare to replace assumptions with quotes.

Employer-supported residence and regional nationality

The current salaried worker route is Ley 25.871 Article 23(a). DNM asks for a certified pre-contract, employer ARCA registration and registration as a foreign-worker requester. The pre-contract specifies duties, hours, term, workplace, pay and employer CUIT. Early employment registration is due within 30 calendar days of starting the application.5

  1. Confirm the residence route

Eligible regional nationality can support MERCOSUR residence. Other salaried workers should verify employer-supported requirements.

  2. Review the pre-contract

Match duties, hours, location, term and pay to the offer. Check certified signatures and employer identifiers.

  3. Gather documents

Prepare identity, entry, address and the required criminal certificates. Follow the current RaDEX route for the temporary category.

  4. Track registration

Confirm the employer's registrations and the 30-calendar-day early employment registration requirement.

The worker service page currently lists one renewable year. The eligible MERCOSUR nationality route lists up to two renewable years. The choice follows the applicant's eligibility, not an assumption that every foreign hire needs the same permit. Confirm the personal file with DNM.4,5

Questions people ask

Should I move to Buenos Aires before securing a local job?

Our recommendation is to secure a verified offer first. Q2 unemployment is 7.2% and the legal minimum falls far below the single renter core model. A city job market does not guarantee a newcomer's hiring result.

What is Argentina's full-time minimum wage in October 2026?

It is US$258 (ARS 391,200) per month from October 1 under the wage council Resolution 4/2026. This is a legal minimum, not a typical Buenos Aires professional salary.

Could the legal minimum fund an independent Buenos Aires rental?

It is below the lower middle-area single core model of US$885 (ARS 1,341,000). That model still excludes insurance, dining and tax. The guide does not support an independent renter plan financed only by the legal minimum.

Which broad sectors employ Buenos Aires residents?

Services account for 73.9%, commerce 14.1%, and industry with construction 11.3% in Q2 2026 ETOI. These are occupied resident shares. They do not measure open positions or foreign hiring demand.

Does the city labor report show jobs available to expatriates?

No. ETOI is a resident labor survey. Vacancy, sponsorship and role-specific salary evidence require actual employer listings and offers. This page does not infer them from occupation shares.

Is every worker without employer pension withholding unregistered?

No. The Q2 survey reports 26.5% without employer withholding, including 10.2% who contribute themselves. The separately identified no-registration share is 16.3% of salaried residents.

Where is the official Buenos Aires job portal?

Trabajo BA is the city's employer listing portal. Use its filters, verify the employer and confirm the current vacancy directly. The role can change after the page check date.

What pay details should I request from a Buenos Aires employer?

Request gross and expected net pay, currency, revision terms, collective agreement, contributions, health arrangements, contract term and any relocation support. Compare net pay with your complete household costs.

Does this guide provide verified technology salary bands?

No occupation-specific current salary sample was verified. The page publishes the official legal minimum and household spending tests instead of presenting guesses as market pay.
