The short answer

Mexico's general minimum wage is US$17 (MXN 315.04) per working day from January 1, 2026. Residence routes use separate legal tests. The general minimum wage and northern border wage are separate statutory wage zones. CONASAMI also publishes monthly equivalents. Its general monthly figure is calculated as the daily wage multiplied by 365 and divided by 12. A 30-day multiplication gives a different amount.2

The UMA is a legal reference unit published by INEGI. The July 2025 visa Lineamientos use daily UMA multiples for the reviewed solvency routes. Using a monthly UMA or the daily minimum wage in those formulas changes the result.1,3

These two bands support the named Mexico City model ages. Other ages have different fees. A monthly reserve divides the annual household fee by twelve. IMSS still collects the annual fee in advance.

Seguro de Salud para la Familia requires actual IMSS admission and a medical questionnaire. The selected applicants are outside mandatory social security coverage. RACERF Article 95 ordinarily requires the applicant plus at least one qualifying family member. Article 97 permits an applicant who truly has no family to declare that fact under oath. Living alone does not meet that condition by itself. The public procedure requires official identification and proof of address, CURP and a social security number. These provisions give no individual immigration-category eligibility verdict.15,16,17

IMSS states that medical services begin on the first day of the month after enrollment. Preexisting conditions can prevent admission. Waiting periods and benefit exclusions also apply. The fee does not guarantee immediate access to every treatment. The Mexico City spending model assumes accepted enrollment, qualifying relationships and explicit ages. IMSS warns that annual payments receive no full or partial refund.15,16,17

What financial requirements apply to temporary residence?

The temporary solvency income branch uses 680 daily UMA. In 2026, that means net monthly employment or pension income above US$4,266 (MXN 79,770.80) for six months. The alternative uses an average monthly balance of 11,460 daily UMA over twelve months. The 2026 amount is US$71,890 (MXN 1,344,372.60). The canonical visa table gives the full national formulas and consular differences.1,3

Mexico separates temporary residence, temporary student residence and permanent residence. The reviewed Lineamientos include solvency, employment offers, investment and family grounds. Their named categories contain no separate digital nomad visa. Remote work still needs the correct immigration and tax treatment.3,4

Temporary residence has a maximum duration of four years under Migration Law Article 52 VII. Permanent residence is indefinite under Article 52 IX. A qualifying temporary resident can request permanent residence after four years under Article 54 V. Approval depends on the applicable ground and documents.5

The Mexico residence visa guide separates the national formulas from consulate-specific dollar sheets. San Diego and Las Vegas publish different temporary solvency figures for 2026. A guide conversion is a comparison aid, while the chosen consulate supplies its application instructions.7,9

Do I need proof of housing for temporary residence through solvency?

Trámite 5 III(a)'s published solvency checklist does not list a lease or hotel reservation. That branch accepts qualifying bank or investment evidence over twelve months, or net employment or pension income over six months. Property ownership is a separate route requiring a public deed under III(f). The residence-route table keeps those grounds separate.3

How does tax residence work in Mexico?

Federal Fiscal Code Article 9 I(a) first addresses a home in Mexico. A person with homes in Mexico and another country falls under the center-of-vital-interests test. The statute names Mexican-source income above 50% of total calendar-year income as one case. It also names a main center of professional activities in Mexico.6

Article 9 uses these connections rather than a universal 183-day threshold. Immigration status and tax residence answer different questions. Any applicable treaty requires its own analysis. A temporary residence card alone does not replace the domestic statutory test.6

Which city guide should you read first?

Mexico City is the first guide in this country collection. Its overview identifies the federal entity separately from the wider metropolitan area. The climate table uses the named Tacubaya station rather than a national average.

Use Mexico City rent prices to compare the same apartment model across boroughs and selected colonias. Use Mexico City cost of living for priced household lines and the costs excluded from each subtotal.

For a move between countries, compare Argentina's residence routes and Brazil's residence routes. Each country has its own immigration categories, fees and tax tests. Apply the rules of the country where the move would occur.
