Cost of living in Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires can fit foreign income, but rent terms and unquoted healthcare decide whether a cheap core budget becomes a workable move.

The short answer

One person in Caballito or Recoleta has a modeled core budget of US$885 to US$1,373 (ARS 1,341,000 to ARS 2,081,000) a month. A couple needs US$1,297 to US$2,055 (ARS 1,966,000 to ARS 3,114,000). A family of four needs US$1,885 to US$2,830 (ARS 2,856,000 to ARS 4,289,000). Add insurance, dining, tuition and taxes before calling those complete living costs.

  • One person has a US$885 to US$1,373 monthly core range in the middle area group, excluding insurance and taxes.
  • The August city one-bedroom asking benchmark is US$536 (ARS 811,651), standardized to 43 mΒ².
  • Forty registered Subte rides cost US$41 (ARS 61,797) in October 2026.
  • The 300 Mbps internet offer rises from US$18 (ARS 27,000) to US$61 (ARS 91,860) after its six-month introduction.

Is Buenos Aires expensive to live in?

Rent and building charges make the biggest recurring commitment. Start with the rent guide and choose among neighborhoods before comparing dollar budgets. A cheap apartment far from your daily route can change transport and childcare needs. The calculator gives a dated starting point, not a personal spending record.

These are derived planning ranges. They combine provisional Q2 2026 neighborhood asking rents, August household baskets, and October transit and provider prices. Home sizes and upper buffers are assumptions. Private health insurance, restaurant meals, school tuition, taxes, flights, deposits, furniture and emergency savings are outside this core budget.

The family profile means two adults and two children. It uses a larger apartment and the official family food basket. It does not assume international school, a car, or a private health plan. Use the family guide to add those choices before making the move.

Private insurance, restaurant meals, tuition, taxes and relocation costs need separate quotes. Switch the household and area to see how the same assumptions change the total. The model holds most household bills constant across areas. It varies rent by the selected neighborhood group. A view, elevator, furnishings or short contract can make your actual quote materially different.

Expensas are building charges. They can cover shared staff, maintenance and services. Ask for the latest statement and the contract allocation. The rental rules explain why the published rent alone cannot answer the housing-cost question. Ask which bills the apartment shares with the building.10

For connectivity, the coworking and internet guide covers address checks and backup options. A 300 Mbps advertisement describes a plan ceiling. It does not establish the measured connection inside your apartment.8

Paying bills and managing currency

Dollar equivalents use ARS 1,515.50 per US dollar from the BCRA on October 8, 2026. Your payment provider can use another rate.1

Keep the lease currency, adjustment index and payment channel together in your budget. A peso lease with frequent revisions can change even when your dollar income stays flat. A dollar lease has a different exposure. Recalculate at each revision instead of trusting a fixed dollar conversion.10

Official migrant-account guidance describes peso savings accounts with no opening or maintenance charge. It asks for accepted identity and a residence certificate. Confirm the bank product and channel before relying on it. The guidance contains old limits, which this guide does not repeat as current.11

How these prices were calculated

These are derived planning ranges. They combine provisional Q2 2026 neighborhood asking rents, August household baskets, and October transit and provider prices. Home sizes and upper buffers are assumptions.3,4,5,6,8,9

  • Rent scales neighborhood asking prices to an assumed home size. One person uses 35 to 50 mΒ², a couple 43 to 65 mΒ², and a family 70 to 90 mΒ².
  • Food and personal spending start with the matching city basket. The upper estimate adds a 50% planning buffer, rather than a measured spending percentile.
  • Internet spans the six-month introduction and the full list price. Electricity, gas, water and building charges include explicit consumption or price buffers.
  • Transit assumes 40 to 80 registered Subte rides per adult each month. Gym is optional and starts switched off.
  • Each calculator line is rounded to the nearest ARS 1,000 before adding the total. Source quotes elsewhere keep their own display rounding.

Questions people ask

Is Buenos Aires affordable on foreign income?

The modeled single core range in the middle group is US$885 to US$1,373 (ARS 1,341,000 to ARS 2,081,000). Affordability depends on the missing insurance, tax and dining costs. A stable foreign income helps you compare those costs, but does not freeze peso prices.

What is the monthly cost for a couple in Buenos Aires?

The middle-area couple core model is US$1,297 to US$2,055 (ARS 1,966,000 to ARS 3,114,000). It assumes a 43 to 65 mΒ² home, two food baskets and two adult transit allowances. Private insurance and restaurant meals are extra.

How much does a family of four need for core living costs?

The middle-area family core range is US$1,885 to US$2,830 (ARS 2,856,000 to ARS 4,289,000). International school tuition, insurance, taxes, a car and relocation costs are excluded.

How much do groceries cost for one adult?

The August 2026 single adult food basket is US$213 (ARS 323,153). The calculator uses that as its lower reference and adds a 50% upper choice buffer. It is a household food benchmark, not a supermarket quote for every diet.

Are building charges included in the asking-rent index?

The guide treats expensas separately from rent. Check the listing, building statement and contract before adding them. An advertised price cannot tell you which shared costs or utilities the owner included.

How much should I allow for internet after the promotion?

Personal lists 300 Mbps at US$61 (ARS 91,860) per month, against US$18 (ARS 27,000) during its six-month introduction. Availability depends on the address. The calculator spans both prices.

Does the living-cost calculator include eating out?

Restaurant meals stay outside the core monthly total. The dated operator quotes above help you add a separate allowance. They do not establish a city average or how often you will eat out. Groceries and the statistical leisure allowance remain in the model.

Which exchange rate does this Buenos Aires budget use?

It uses the BCRA October 8, 2026 reference of ARS 1,515.50 per US dollar. That is a comparison rate. Your card, bank or remittance quote can differ and can include fees.

Is the budget a record of what expatriates actually spend?

No. It combines official city inputs and current provider prices with stated home-size and consumption assumptions. Its upper buffers are planning choices, not survey percentiles. Use actual housing and insurance quotes to personalize it.
