Can English speakers get jobs in São Paulo?

Yes, but the visa comes before the job search. Most work permission is tied to a Brazilian employer, and outside international teams you'll work in Portuguese.

Finding jobs in São Paulo for English speakers starts with a legal route to work. The EU-Brazil visa waiver, for example, excludes paid work and employment. Our guide to Brazil visas and residency covers every route.26

Employer sponsorship

A Brazilian company sponsors your labor residence under Resolution 2/2017 and hires you on a CLT contract.

Family reunion

Family reunion residence, for relatives of Brazilians or of foreign residents, allows any paid work on the same terms as Brazilians. It covers the spouse or partner of a sponsored worker.

A Brazilian degree

Graduates of accredited Brazilian degree programs can apply from inside Brazil under Resolution 50/2024.

A foreign employer

The digital nomad visa needs US$1,500 a month from abroad or US$18,000 in savings, and excludes Brazilian employers. See remote work from São Paulo.

São Paulo state is Brazil's main market for expat jobs. It got 58.9% of the country's residence grants to qualified foreign workers in 2025. On jobs in Brazil for Americans, US-born applicants were among the top three nationalities for labor and investment grants in Q2 2026.18 19

How to get a work visa for Brazil

To work for a Brazilian company, you need labor residence. For hires from abroad, the employer applies under CNIg Resolution 2/2017, which the Ministry of Justice still lists as current in October 2026.

  1. Get a CLT offer

A worker abroad needs a fixed-term CLT contract with a Brazilian employer. Contractor deals don't qualify.

  2. The employer applies

It files in MigranteWeb and documents your qualifications. The Ministry of Justice's labor immigration office (CGIL) decides. The fee is R$168.13, with a target of 30 days for a complete file, or 60 if corrections are needed.

  3. Prior residence, then the visa

CGIL grants a residência prévia, which consulates generally require before they issue the temporary work visa.

  4. Register with the Federal Police

Register within 90 days of entry or pay a fine. The CRNM ID card costs R$204.77, and the government allows up to 180 days for the full service.

  5. Renew or go indefinite

Residence lasts up to 2 years. Under Resolution 30/2018 it can be renewed for up to 2 more years or made indefinite.

Sponsorship means the employer files the request and proves you qualify. You must fit one of six Resolution 2/2017 profiles.21

  • A degree plus 2 years of experience
  • Technical training plus 3 years of experience

Tech jobs and the São Paulo startup scene

Startup Genome's 2026 report ranks São Paulo 37th in the world and first in Latin America. Its 2025 report named fintech, agtech and new food, and biotech as local strengths. In the 2025 ABStartups mapping, 45% of Brazil's 3,650 active startups were in São Paulo state.45 46 67

Formal tech hiring cooled in 2026, with information and communication down a net 817 jobs. Software developers on CLT contracts had a median starting salary of R$8,387 across 14,468 hires in January to August 2026. Startups gather at hubs such as Cubo Itaú in Vila Olímpia, and our coworking guide covers desks.8 47

Finance jobs in São Paulo

English teaching jobs in São Paulo

Teaching English doesn't skip the visa step, since a school hiring from abroad must sponsor you. With no experience, that means a degree relevant to the job, because the other Resolution 2/2017 profiles need 1 to 4 years of work. The profiles don't mention TEFL, TESOL or CELTA, so each school sets its own certificate requirements.21

Pay for teaching English in Brazil is modest. Across 572 CLT hires in January to August 2026, English teachers had a median starting salary of R$4,057 (about US$813). It was R$3,542 in 2025. Free-course school teachers, the category many language schools use, had a median of R$2,772, often for part-time hours.1 8

Regular private schools follow the SINPRO-SP union agreement. Until February 2027, it sets R$2,357.29 a month for preschool to grade 5 teachers on 22 hours a week. Specialist teachers get R$27.95 to R$43.32 per class hour, plus 5% for preparation. The union lists no agreement for language schools.48 49

Private lessons also need a status that allows work. Invoicing them as a MEI requires a CRNM or a provisional migration document.42

Business districts and multinational companies

São Paulo city produced 9.7% of Brazil's GDP in 2023, about R$1.07 trillion and the most of any municipality. Rio de Janeiro came second at 3.8%.

In 2024, 6,822,750 people worked in the city's formal businesses and organizations, the most of any Brazilian city.6 7

Among multinational companies in São Paulo, Google has three sites, including an office at Av. Brigadeiro Faria Lima 3477 and an engineering center in Butantã. IT firms took most of the space leased on Faria Lima in Q2 2026, led by Shopee.10 11

Line 9-Esmeralda serves the Faria Lima to Chucri Zaidan corridor, but commutes run long. In Metrô's 2023 survey, 46% of riders took over an hour door to door. In our neighborhood commute scores, Pinheiros rates top for all three main districts, and Itaim Bibi for Faria Lima and Berrini.16 17

Recognizing foreign degrees and documents

A sponsoring employer must document your qualifications, so have your diplomas apostilled and translated. Full revalidation matters most in regulated professions, which require exams or council registration before you practice.

Under the LDB education law, public universities that offer the same course revalidate foreign undergraduate diplomas. Universities with accredited graduate programs in the field recognize master's degrees and doctorates.23 55

Each university sets its own procedure in a notice called an edital. Some, such as UFMG, take requests through the Ministry of Education's Carolina Bori platform. Doctors must also pass INEP's Revalida exam.56 57

For immigration files, foreign documents generally need an apostille and a sworn translation made in Brazil. The US, UK, Canada and Australia all belong to the Apostille Convention. In São Paulo, sworn translators register with the state commercial registry JUCESP, which has an online lookup.58 59 71

CLT vs PJ contracts in Brazil

A CLT employee works regularly for an employer, under its direction, for a salary. Since the 2017 reform, an independent contractor (autônomo) who meets every legal formality isn't an employee, even with exclusive, continuous work.

How the 13th salary works in Brazil

Tax and health cover

In 2026, income tax is zero on taxable pay up to R$5,000 a month (about US$1,002), phasing out by R$7,350. The top monthly rate is 27.5%. A Brazilian employment contract makes you tax resident from arrival.36 37 38

In August 2026, 78.7% of São Paulo city residents with a medical plan had a company plan. Company plans with 30 or more members can't impose waiting periods on people who join within 30 days of the contract or of starting work. See healthcare in São Paulo.43 44

Portuguese at work

Expect to work in Portuguese outside international teams. Brazil ranked 75th of 123 in the EF English Proficiency Index 2025, at 482 against a global average of 488.

In the same index, São Paulo city scored 518 and Brazilians in IT roles 551. Speaking (464) and writing (442) were the country's weakest skills.60 61

The US Foreign Service Institute puts Portuguese among the languages closest to English, at about 24 weeks of training for professional use. The next Celpe-Bras proficiency exam runs October 20 to 23, 2026, in Brazil.62 63

Free classes help. The city's Portas Abertas program teaches Portuguese to immigrants in municipal schools at three levels. Enrollment opens each semester, regardless of nationality or migration status.72
