São Paulo for remote workers

Remote work and digital nomad life in São Paulo

For a digital nomad, São Paulo offers fast fiber, a workday that overlaps US hours, and a legal way to stay. Brazil's digital nomad visa needs US$1,500 a month in foreign income or US$18,000 in savings and lasts up to one year, renewable for another year. Stay past 183 days in any 12 months, though, and Brazil taxes your worldwide income.

São Paulo for digital nomads

São Paulo suits remote workers paid from the Americas or Europe who want big-city infrastructure and a legal stay of up to two years.

As a digital nomad in São Paulo, you get long overlap with US and European teams and fast home fiber. Unlimited coworking starts at R$199 a month (US$40). The trade-offs are Portuguese in daily life, Brazilian tax once you pass 183 days, and street crime that shapes where you live.17 27 30 46 67

  • Hours. You share 7 to 8 working hours with New York and 5 to 6 with London.
  • Internet. Median home broadband in the city reached 249.63 Mbps in August 2026 (Ookla).
  • Visa. The nomad residence lasts up to one year and renews once. The Brazil visas and residency guide compares it with the other routes.
  • Language. EF's 2025 index puts Brazil in its low English proficiency band, though São Paulo scores above the national average.
  • Safety. The UK government warns of card cloning and express kidnappings. Read how safe São Paulo is before you choose an area.

Brazil's digital nomad visa

Brazil's digital nomad visa comes from CNIg Resolution 45, in force since January 24, 2022. It covers remote work for an employer or client abroad.

How to apply

  1. Choose a route

Apply at a consulate before you travel, or enter as a visitor and file with the MJSP. Since 2025, a visit visa can convert to residence this way.

  2. Gather documents

You'll need a passport, criminal records, a remote work statement, your foreign contract and proof of income or savings. Foreign papers generally need an apostille and a sworn translation made in Brazil.

  3. Register in São Paulo

The MJSP aims to decide complete files in 30 days. Then book the Federal Police office at Rua Hugo D'Antola 95, Lapa de Baixo. Your protocol gives the same rights as the card until it arrives, about 30 business days later.

  4. Plan for renewal

Renewal, for an equal period, needs your CRNM card, fresh proof of nomad status and new criminal records. Resolution 45 has no clause for switching to permanent residence, so settling for good means applying on another basis, such as family reunion or retirement.

Working remotely from Brazil as a visitor

Resolution 45 also allows nomad work on visitor status, within each nationality's stay rules. US, Canadian and Australian citizens need a US$80.90 e-visa, good for 90 days per stay and 180 a year. British citizens get 90 days visa-free. The EU waiver excludes paid work, so EU citizens should ask a consulate first.1 12 13 14

Brazil's one-year initial term beats Argentina's 180-day nomad residence, which can be extended once (São Paulo vs Buenos Aires). Chile has no nomad category (São Paulo vs Santiago). The Ministry of Justice's 2026 ordinances, updated September 22, changed nothing here. Still, confirm the document list with your consulate or the MJSP before filing.4 15 16

Taxes for remote workers in Brazil

Brazil taxes your worldwide income once you're a tax resident. On a temporary visa with no Brazilian job, that starts on your 184th day in Brazil within any 12 months, consecutive or not.

Stay 183 days or fewer and you remain a non-resident, and the count restarts at your next entry. Once you're resident, foreign salary and freelance fees from clients abroad are taxed through the monthly carnê-leão and the annual return. That applies even if the money stays abroad.17

Getting paid and banking

About 94% of adults in São Paulo state used Pix in December 2025. The Central Bank's instant payment system is free for individuals and runs from a Brazilian account.

  1. Get a CPF

Brazil's taxpayer number is free online, R$7 at partner offices, or available through a consulate from abroad.

  2. Register

The Migration Law guarantees migrants a bank account, and your Federal Police protocol counts while the card is pending.

  3. Open an account

Caixa opens one in its app with a photo ID and a CPF in good standing, with no proof of income.

Questions people ask

Is São Paulo good for digital nomads?

Yes, if your team is in the Americas or Europe. You share 7 to 8 working hours with New York, and median home broadband hit 249.63 Mbps in August 2026. The downsides are Portuguese, tax after 183 days and street crime.

Does Brazil have a digital nomad visa?

Yes. Resolution 45/2021 gives remote workers for foreign employers up to one year of residence, renewable for an equal period. It requires US$1,500 a month in foreign income or US$18,000 in savings. Apply at a consulate, or to the Ministry of Justice from inside Brazil.

Can freelancers get Brazil's digital nomad visa?

They can if their clients are abroad. The resolution accepts a service contract or other proof of work for a foreign employer, plus the income or savings test. Work for a Brazil-based employer, with or without a contract, isn't covered.

What remote work can I do after moving to São Paulo?

On the nomad visa or as a visitor, you can work remotely for employers or clients outside Brazil. A job with a Brazil-based employer, with or without a formal contract, needs a different residence basis, usually an employer-sponsored work visa. The guide to working in São Paulo covers that route.

Is US$18,000 in savings enough for Brazil's digital nomad visa?

It meets the legal minimum, since US$18,000 in bank funds is the alternative to monthly income. That's about R$89,820, or roughly 9 to 16 months for one person in a middle-priced area spending R$5,480 to R$9,655 a month.

What health insurance does Brazil's digital nomad visa require?

Consular applicants need health insurance valid in Brazil, with no minimum cover and no required Brazilian insurer. The in-country application to the Ministry of Justice doesn't list insurance. Check what your consulate accepts.

Do I pay tax in Brazil as a remote worker?

Only once you're a tax resident, which on a temporary visa without a Brazilian job starts on day 184 in Brazil within 12 months. From then on Brazil taxes your worldwide income, including foreign pay. Foreign income from before that date isn't taxed.

What is carnê-leão, and do remote workers in Brazil have to pay it?

Carnê-leão is the monthly tax Brazilian tax residents pay on foreign income. It's due by the last business day of the next month, even if the money stays abroad. You also report it in the annual return.

How is online freelance income taxed in Brazil?

Fees from clients abroad count as foreign income, and Brazil doesn't tax them before you become a tax resident. Once you're resident, you pay carnê-leão each month on the progressive table, which reaches 27.5% above R$4,664.68, and report the income in the annual return. A 2026 reduction removes the tax on income up to R$5,000 a month and phases out by R$7,350.

What is the time difference between São Paulo and New York?

São Paulo is 1 hour ahead of New York until November 1, 2026, then 2 hours ahead until March 14, 2027. Brazil has no daylight saving time, so only US clock changes move the gap.

What is the time difference between São Paulo and London?

London is 4 hours ahead of São Paulo until October 25, 2026, then 3 hours ahead until March 28, 2027. On a 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. day in both cities, you share 5 to 6 hours.

What is the time difference between São Paulo and Los Angeles?

São Paulo is 4 hours ahead of Los Angeles until November 1, 2026, then 5 hours ahead until March 14, 2027. On a 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. day in both cities, you share 4 to 5 hours.

How much does a digital nomad spend in São Paulo?

One person in a middle-priced area spends about R$5,480 to R$9,655 a month (US$1,098 to US$1,935), including a health plan. Coworking adds R$199 to R$1,003, and rents in Pinheiros or Jardins run higher.
