Is São Paulo a good place to raise a family?

Yes, for families who can budget for private school and live near a park. The tradeoffs are cost, phone theft and a long, wet summer.

Moving to São Paulo with kids gives you large parks, museums with free days and a children's hospital accredited by Joint Commission International (JCI). Schools offer US, British, French, German and IB qualifications, and Graded alone has 1,318 students from 53 nationalities.1 2 3 5 24

Street crime centers on phones. The city had 1,390.5 phone robberies and thefts per 100,000 residents in 2025, the third-highest rate among Brazilian cities over 100,000 people.6

On 1991 to 2020 averages, January brings highs of 28.6°C (83°F) and 292 mm (11.5 inches) of rain. The Health Ministry says dengue cases rise mainly from October to May. See São Paulo weather by month.7 8

Expat families and community

The American Society of São Paulo has more than 500 members from over 25 countries and runs Halloween and Thanksgiving events. Family membership costs R$519 ($104) a year in 2026. The city's free Portas Abertas program teaches Portuguese to immigrants of any nationality.9 10 11

Is São Paulo safe for families?

Violent crime is low for Brazil and falling, while theft is the everyday risk.

São Paulo state had 7.8 intentional violent deaths per 100,000 people in 2025, against 19.1 for Brazil. City homicides fell 11% from January to July 2026, and robberies fell about 15% through August.6 32 33

The UK names Avenida Paulista, the historic center and Pinheiros as theft hotspots. Canada warns that armed home invasions peak in December and January, when residents travel.34 35

Schools for expat kids in São Paulo

School is compulsory from age 4 to 17, and public schools must take migrant children right away.

A public school can't refuse a child because documents lack a sworn translation or because the child has no migration ID or regular status. Schools must teach Portuguese as a welcome language and can't put migrant students in separate classes. The Supreme Court ruled in 2018 that there's no right to homeschool without a specific law.39 40 41

How children adapt to school in Portuguese

No official figure tracks how fast migrant children adapt, but the rules set the starting point. A child with no school records is placed by an assessment in their mother tongue, and age alone decides placement for preschool and first grade.39

Bilingual schools are a middle route. Beacon says children up to age 6 need no English for its immersion program. Mackenzie, which teaches in Portuguese, runs an optional English afternoon program for Grades 2 to 5 at 10 payments of R$373 ($75) in 2026.19 115 120

Hiring a nanny under Brazilian law

  1. Check if the law applies

Anyone who works for your household more than two days a week is a domestic employee under Complementary Law 150/2015. The minimum age is 18.

  2. Register in eSocial

Use a gov.br account and register the worker by the day before they start.

  3. Respect hours and leave

The limit is 8 hours a day and 44 a week, with overtime paid at least 50% extra. After 12 months, the worker gets 30 days' paid vacation plus a third. Night work earns 20% extra, and maternity leave is 120 days.

  4. Pay by the 7th

Pay wages and the DAE slip by the 7th of the next month. The slip covers about 20% in employer charges and withholds the worker's 7.5% to 14% INSS.

  5. Pay the 13th salary

Pay it in two installments, the second by December 20.
