Beaches near São Paulo

The closest beaches near São Paulo are at Santos and Guarujá, 72 km away. Maresias, Ilhabela and Ubatuba, 146 to 224 km out, suit a weekend, and state parks cover most of Ilhabela and Ubatuba.

Santos, the closest beach city

Santos is 72 km (45 miles) away by the city government's count. Its roughly 7 km of beach are lined by what Guinness lists as the world's largest beachfront garden. It drew about 2.8 million tourists in the 2023/24 summer, so expect crowds in high season.7

Away from the sand, the Coffee Museum has filled the former coffee exchange since 1998. The Museu Pelé shows Pelé's personal collection in the Valongo district. A tourist tram leaves from Valongo station, built in 1867, and runs original trams from Scotland, Portugal, Italy and Japan through the historic center. The VLT light rail links Santos with São Vicente.7 8

Santos cruise port to São Paulo

Cruise ships use the Concais terminal, 76 km (47 miles) from São Paulo. Viação Cometa coaches link Santos port with Jabaquara terminal and with Guarulhos and Congonhas airports. Check-in closes 2 hours before sailing, and Concais suggests arriving after 11:30 to miss the morning disembarkation rush. Private cars can't enter and must use the Gate 3 express bay.9 10 11

Guarujá

Guarujá is reached through Santos. The 24-hour state car ferry crosses about 450 m in roughly 5 minutes. Cars pay R$12.30 (US$2.50) and pedestrians R$3.10 (US$0.60), charged in Guarujá and covering both directions. The local visitors bureau promotes 27 beaches.12 13 14

Maresias, Juquehy and São Sebastião

The São Sebastião unit of Serra do Mar State Park has its base in Juquehy, 146 km (91 miles) from São Paulo. Entry is free with booking, Tuesday to Sunday 8:00 to 17:00, and its trails include a lookout walk between Maresias and Paúba. Without a car, Pássaro Marron lists Tietê on its coastal route to Maresias, Juquehy and Boiçucanga.18 19

Ilhabela from São Paulo

Ilhabela is about 200 km (124 miles) away. Drive to São Sebastião for the state ferry, a 2.4 km crossing of 14 to 18 minutes. It runs 24 hours, hourly from midnight to 5:00 and up to every 30 minutes from 5:30 to 23:30. Cars pay R$19 (US$4) on weekdays and R$28.50 (US$6) on weekends and holidays.13 15 17

Since March 31, 2026, the island has also charged R$48 (US$10) each time a car enters and R$10 (US$2) for a motorcycle. Pay by toll tag, Pix or boleto. Vehicles registered in Ilhabela and São Sebastião are exempt.16

Ilhabela State Park covers about 85% of the municipality, with more than 250 waterfalls and 13 listed trails. Entry is free with booking, daily 8:00 to 18:00.17

Ubatuba

Ubatuba is 224 km (139 miles) away, with 102 beaches and 16 islands by its tourism office's count. Buser charter buses from a Barra Funda boarding point were scheduled at 4 hours 10 minutes. Fares for mid-October 2026 departures ran about R$61 to R$70 (US$12 to US$14).20 22

Visiting cars pay a fee for each 24 hours, read by plate cameras, unless they pass through in under 4 hours. Decree 8949 of 2025 sets the amounts.21

The Picinguaba unit of Serra do Mar State Park covers about 80% of Ubatuba, with five beaches and 17 trails. Ilha Anchieta State Park, 213 km (132 miles) from São Paulo, protects seven beaches and opens Thursday to Tuesday 8:00 to 17:00. Both charge Brazilians R$19 (US$4) with booking.23 24

Paraty from São Paulo

Paraty is in Rio de Janeiro state. Primar Turismo buses from Tietê, sold on Buser, take 6 hours 10 minutes to 7 hours. October 2026 fares ran about R$83 to R$273 (US$17 to US$55).25

Mountain getaways from São Paulo

For a mountain weekend, head to Campos do Jordão, São Bento do Sapucaí or Monte Verde. For a single day, Cantareira and Caminhos do Mar are within 40 km.

Is Campos do Jordão worth visiting?

Yes, for a mountain weekend 173 km (107 miles) from the city. Its center sits at 1,628 m (5,341 ft), which the city calls the highest municipal seat in Brazil. Its classical music winter festival dates to 1970 and its railway to 1914.26

Campos do Jordão State Park, which the state calls São Paulo's oldest protected area, opens daily 9:00 to 18:00 for R$16 (US$3), with no booking needed.27

São Bento do Sapucaí and Pedra do Baú

São Bento do Sapucaí is 185 km (115 miles) away, served by Pássaro Marron and Expresso Gardênia buses. Pedra do Baú, listed at 200 km (124 miles), rises to 1,950 m (6,398 ft). It has about 30 climbing routes and a via ferrata, both booked ahead, and opens daily 9:00 to 18:00 for R$18 (US$4).28 29 30

Monte Verde

Monte Verde is in Camanducaia, across the state line in Minas Gerais. It charges visiting cars a R$9.20 (US$2) environmental fee and motorbikes R$4.60 (US$1), paid only through the official online portal. No official distance from São Paulo is published.31

Serra da Cantareira

Cantareira State Park is inside the city, entered at Rua do Horto 1799. Created in 1963, it's part of a UNESCO biosphere reserve, and the state calls it one of the world's largest urban forests. It opens Wednesday to Sunday 8:00 to 14:00 and costs Brazilians R$19 (US$4), with booking.32

In July 2026, press reports said concessionaire Urbia told the state it intends to hand back the park concession. No date is set for a new tender, so check opening times before you go.33

Caminhos do Mar

Caminhos do Mar, 39.8 km (25 miles) away in São Bernardo do Campo, preserves the colonial Calçada do Lorena trail and the mountain stretch of the Old Santos Road. It opens Wednesday to Sunday 8:00 to 17:00.34

Countryside towns and heritage trips

These trips work without a beach or a mountain. Embu das Artes and the Paranapiacaba train fit in a day, and Holambra and Socorro suit a day or a night away.

Embu das Artes

Embu das Artes is worth a day trip for its arts and crafts fair, running since 1969 on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. In January 2025 the city counted about 500 exhibitors and 30,000 to 40,000 visitors a weekend, so go early.36

It's about 30 minutes from central São Paulo on the Régis Bittencourt highway (BR-116). EMTU buses 033, 056 and 002 run from Vila Sônia, Campo Limpo and Capão Redondo metro stations, and the city charges no tourist fee.35 37

Paranapiacaba by heritage train

CPTM's Expresso Turístico, pulled by a 1952 diesel locomotive, leaves Luz at 8:30 and reaches Paranapiacaba at 10:30. The return leaves at 16:30 and gets back to Luz at 18:30. The same service also runs to Jundiaí and Mogi das Cruzes.43 44

Round trips cost R$50 (US$10) for one person, R$82 (US$16) for two and R$148 (US$30) for four, sold online. Students and people 60 and over pay half.43

Holambra

Holambra is about 130 km (81 miles) away and 40 km from Campinas. The city says it handles about half of Brazil's flower market. Its Moinho Povos Unidos windmill, about 38 m tall, opens Wednesday to Sunday and holidays, 10:00 to 17:00, for R$18 (US$4).38 39

The Expoflora flower show ran from August 28 to September 27, 2026. Organizers list the 2027 show on weekends from August 21 to September 26, plus September 6, 7 and 17, with full-price box-office tickets at R$176 (US$35).38 39

Socorro

Socorro is 132 km (82 miles) away by the Fernão Dias (BR-381) and SP-008. Its tourism portal lists rafting on the Rio do Peixe, including family trips with children. For schools, parks and family life in the city, see moving to São Paulo with kids.40 41 42

Wildlife, birdwatching and hiking near São Paulo

The best wildlife near São Paulo is in state parks 204 to 350 km away and the private Legado das Águas reserve. The state parks below charge Brazilians R$19 (US$4), and most need booking.

Hiking near São Paulo

For a hike close to home, Cantareira is inside the city and the Calçada do Lorena trail at Caminhos do Mar is 39.8 km away. On a weekend, Ilhabela's park lists 13 trails, Picinguaba 17, and Pedra do Baú has a via ferrata that needs booking.17 23 30 32 34

São Paulo to Rio de Janeiro by air, bus or car

A day trip from São Paulo to Rio works only by air. By bus or car, plan a weekend.

In August 2026, about 49 flights a day ran from Congonhas to Rio's Santos Dumont airport. The median scheduled time was 60 minutes, and 65 minutes on the way back.52

Congonhas has had a Line 17-Gold monorail station since March 31, 2026, which helps if you live in Brooklin. The line is free during its transition phase but runs only Monday to Saturday, 6:00 to 22:00. Plan another way home from a Sunday flight.56 57

Buses from Tietê took 5.5 to 6.5 hours in October 2026 listings, for about R$149 to R$300 (US$30 to US$60). By car, the Via Dutra (BR-116) runs 402 km (250 miles), with toll plazas and free-flow tolls run by RioSP.53 54 55

Iguazu Falls from São Paulo

Iguazu Falls from São Paulo means a flight of about 1 hour 50 minutes, so make it a long weekend.

In August 2026, 237 flights ran from Guarulhos to Foz do Iguaçu, about 7 to 8 a day, and 186 ran from Congonhas. Scheduled flying time was about 1 hour 50 minutes from either airport.52

The Brazilian side of the park opens daily. Entry runs 9:00 to 16:00 on weekdays and 8:30 to 16:00 on weekends, and the park closes at 17:30. Car parking costs R$65 (US$13) a day, and city bus 120 runs to the park from Foz do Iguaçu's urban bus terminal.58

Tickets are sold only online. Brazilians and other Mercosur citizens get 10% off, and children up to 6 enter free. The park had a record 186,906 visitors in September 2026, with São Paulo state the second-largest Brazilian source, so book ahead.59 60

Best time for weekend trips from São Paulo

June to August are the driest months, and January is the wettest.

INMET's 1991 to 2020 normals give the city 4 to 5 rain days a month from June to August. January has 17, with 292 mm of rain on average. Average highs run from 22.9°C (73°F) in June and July to 29°C (84°F) in February. These figures are for the city station, not the coast or the mountains.2 3 4

Tolls, town fees and driving rules

Tolls on state concession highways and intercity bus fares rose 4.72% on July 1, 2026, and Tamoios tolls rose 5.08%.

Free-flow gantries with no booths now run on roads including the Tamoios bypass at Caraguatatuba and the Mogi-Bertioga road. Without a toll tag, pay online by plate within 30 days or face a R$195.23 (US$39) fine and 5 license points. On the road to Santos, gantries on the Anchieta and Imigrantes began testing in June 2026 and will replace the toll plazas there.61 62 63
