Is $4,000 a month good money in Brazil?

Yes, by local standards it's a high income. In 2025, work income above R$12,534 a month put someone in São Paulo state's top 5%. It's also about 3.7 times the R$5,431 a month that São Paulo city workers usually earned from their main job in Q2 2026. It clears the income thresholds for Brazil's digital nomad and retiree visas. The nomad visa asks for US$1,500 a month from a foreign employer or client, or US$18,000 in funds. The retiree visa asks for a pension of at least US$2,000 a month that can be transferred to Brazil. Confirm the full requirements with a Brazilian consulate.21 22 28 29

Cost of living in São Paulo for a family of four

School fees are the big cost in an expat family budget.

Before school, a family of four in a prime area spends R$16,210 to R$27,725 ($3,248 to $5,556) a month. Two children in grades 1 to 5 at Mackenzie, a Brazilian private school, raise that to R$24,600 to R$36,115 ($4,930 to $7,237). With two children in Graded's Lower School, it's R$41,850 to R$53,365 ($8,387 to $10,694).2 4 23 26

Living in Vila Mariana or Perdizes cuts the before-school range to R$14,590 to R$25,225 ($2,924 to $5,055). Private school for two children still doesn't fit in $4,000 unless an employer pays.2 4

What an expat salary package changes

Two children at Graded's Lower School cost about R$25,640 a month in 2026-27, more than the whole $4,000. That makes a school allowance the biggest item in an expat family budget, ahead of housing. A company health plan also helps, because plans with 30 or more members must waive waiting periods for people who join within 30 days of starting work.12 26

Two adults in these age bands on Top NPlus pay about R$6,050 to R$7,030 ($1,213 to $1,408) a month, roughly a third of $4,000. For plans signed since 2004, prices step up across 10 age bands, and the last band starts at 59.11 13

New individual and family plans can impose waiting periods of up to 24 hours for urgent and emergency care, 300 days for full-term childbirth and 180 days for everything else. Company plans with 30 or more members must waive them for people who join within 30 days of the contract or of starting work.
