Santiago vs São Paulo safety
Neither city is clearly safer, and theft is the everyday risk in both.
The US rates Brazil and Chile at Level 2, exercise increased caution, in August 2026 advisories. São Paulo city had about 4.5 homicide victims per 100,000 in 2025, not counting police killings, or 7.2 on FBSP's broader measure that includes them. The Santiago Metropolitan Region's rate was 6.2.40 41 44 46
Santiago's homicides cluster outside the eastern comunas popular with foreigners. In 2025 Las Condes and Providencia had one victim each, against 46 in Puente Alto. The regional rate kept falling in the first half of 2026.44 45
São Paulo had 1,390.5 phone robberies and thefts per 100,000 residents in 2025, the third-highest rate among Brazilian cities of over 100,000 people. Robberies of all kinds in the city fell 14.6% that year. Read the São Paulo safety guide before you pick an area.42 43
In Santiago, the State Department reports frequent pickpocketing in central tourist areas and on the subway. Its August 2026 advisory adds that large protests can start at short notice and often disrupt buses and the Metro. The UK warns of a risk of violent protests in central Santiago, especially on Friday afternoons and evenings.46 47 48
Earthquakes and floods
The UK lists major earthquakes as a risk in Chile, where building rules require new structures to account for seismic risk. São Paulo's hazard is summer storms, which bring flooding and landslides from November to about mid-April.14 48
Santiago vs São Paulo weather
São Paulo is mild and wet. Santiago is drier and sunnier, with hotter summer afternoons and colder winter nights.

Chile vs Brazil to live, visas compared
Chile is easier to visit. Brazil publishes clearer income rules for remote workers and retirees.
| Situation | Brazil | Chile |
|---|---|---|
| US, Canadian or Australian visitor | E-visa since April 2025, US$80.90 | No visa, up to 90 days |
| UK or EU visitor | No visa, 90 days (EU, 3 months in any 6) | No visa, up to 90 days |
| Extending a visit | Up to 90 more days if your country offers Brazilians the same, 180 days a year at most | Once, up to 90 more days, US$100 |
| Remote work | Nomad visa, US$1,500 a month or US$18,000 saved, 1 year, renewable | No remote-work category among 15 residence types |
| Retirement | US$2,000 monthly pension, 2 years, then can become indefinite | Pension covering basic needs, no fixed amount on SERMIG's page |
| Applying in the country | Allowed for the nomad visa | Generally not, except family and humanitarian cases |
Brazil also lets you work remotely for a foreign employer as a visitor, within the stay limits. Chile says visitors may not do paid activities. See Brazil visas and residency, remote work from São Paulo and retiring in São Paulo.54 58
Santiago vs São Paulo healthcare
Both countries have a public system that foreign residents can join, plus private insurers. Chile charges for public cover as a share of income.
| Measure | São Paulo | Santiago, Chile |
|---|---|---|
| Public system | SUS, a right in Brazil's Constitution, with a card for legal residents | Fonasa, open to residence applicants on the same terms as Chileans |
| Private option | Health plans regulated by ANS | Isapres, regulated by the Superintendencia de Salud |
| What you pay | Median individual plan R$570 (US$115) a month at ages 29 to 33, R$1,496 (US$300) at 59 and over, June 2026 | Fonasa takes 7% of income, whatever your age or dependents |
Chile's legal health contribution is 7% of taxable pay, and taxable pay has been capped at UF 90 a month since February 2026. Joining an Isapre needs a signed health declaration, and the Isapre can refuse to cover pre-existing conditions you leave off it. In January 2026, 94% of Isapre plans were priced in UF, so their peso cost rises with inflation.78 79 80
US Medicare doesn't apply in Chile, and the State Department says major Chilean hospitals accept credit cards. Plan terms depend on your age and health, so check them with the insurer before you sign. See healthcare in São Paulo for hospitals and plan types.47
