Monthly budget and health costs
Mexico's minimum wage, which applies in Mexico City, is higher in dollars than either Brazilian rate, and its inflation is slightly lower. No official source prices groceries and bills in both cities on the same basis, so we don't publish a Mexico City budget. The health plan is R$570 to R$910 (US$114 to US$182) of that São Paulo budget, based on ANS reference prices for adults aged 29 to 43 in June 2026. For Mexico City, the US State Department says health facilities are excellent but providers usually want payment before treatment. Mexico City is cooler and drier, and sits almost three times as high. São Paulo has milder nights and about twice the rain.

Canada warns that Mexico City's altitude can cause health problems, and the US State Department advises watching for altitude sickness. About 76% of Mexico City's rain falls from June to September, while São Paulo's wettest months run from December to March.11 12 13 14
Earthquakes, floods and air quality
Canada says Mexico City sits in an active seismic zone and that its air pollution peaks from December to March. São Paulo's recurring hazard is summer storms, which the city's emergency center says cause street flooding and landslides. See São Paulo weather by month for the rainy season.13 45

Phone theft is São Paulo's weak spot. Its 2025 rate of 1,390.5 phone robberies and thefts per 100,000 residents was third-highest among Brazilian cities over 100,000 people. Robberies in the city fell 14.6% that year to 98,358, the lowest since SSP's series began in 2001.40 41
Mexico City varies by borough. In INEGI's June 2026 survey, 17.4% of adults in Benito Juárez said their city felt unsafe, against 52.4% in Cuauhtémoc and 73.3% in Iztapalapa. Canada advises a high degree of caution across Mexico but sets no stricter advisory for Mexico City.13 43
In both cities, book rides through an app or a regulated stand. The US advisory for Mexico warns against street-hailed taxis, and the UK FCDO reports robberies in unlicensed taxis and fake ride-hailing accounts in Brazil. Read our São Paulo safety guide for the habits that matter.15 44

Staying longer
Brazil's digital nomad visa asks for US$1,500 a month in foreign income or US$18,000 in savings. Its retiree visa asks for proof that at least US$2,000 a month from a pension is transferred to Brazil. A local job needs a Brazilian employer to file for your work residence, backed by a CLT employment contract. See Brazil visas and residency for each route.52 53 54
Mexico charges MXN 11,141 (US$620) in 2026 to exchange a consular visa for a one-year temporary resident card, plus MXN 4,341 (US$241) for permission to work. Its income thresholds aren't covered here, so ask the consulate handling your file.51
Jobs and the Mexico City vs São Paulo tech scene
Startup Genome's 2026 report ranks São Paulo first in Latin America and Mexico City second.
São Paulo had 6,822,750 people working in registered businesses and organizations in 2024, the most of any Brazilian city, and 5.9% unemployment in the second quarter of 2026. Mexico City's 4.2% rate that quarter was the highest of Mexico's 32 federal entities, and 45.3% of its workers were informal. Each country uses its own survey.3 55 56 57

No official source rates food or nightlife in both cities on the same basis. This section sticks to what each city measures.
Eating out
A full lunch at São Paulo restaurants that take meal vouchers averaged R$62.30 (US$12) in ABBT's 2025 survey. A prato feito, the daily set plate, averaged R$44.16 (US$9), and an à la carte meal R$103.66 (US$21). We found no comparable meal-price survey for Mexico City.24
São Paulo runs more than 955 street markets, called feiras livres, and the Mercado Municipal has traded since 1933. In Liberdade, the Museum of Japanese Immigration covers the community that began arriving in Brazil in 1908.25 26 27 28
Nightlife and events
São Paulo's calendar includes Formula 1 at Interlagos through 2030, the 24-hour Virada Cultural and a street carnival with 627 blocos in 2026. For bars, our neighborhood scores rate Pinheiros, Vila Madalena and Consolação highest.67 68 69
Canada reports spiked drinks in crowded São Paulo bars and restaurants, used to force victims to withdraw cash. It advises ordering drinks in sealed bottles or cans.29
Getting around
Mexico City's Metro carried 103.7 million passengers in July 2026, and 34.5% of its workers walked to work in 2025. São Paulo's Metrô lists 7 lines over 110.9 km (68.9 miles) and more than 4.2 million passengers a day. Those figures predate the first stretch of Line 6, which opened in July 2026. Mexico City or São Paulo for expats
Neither city has a large foreign population. Foreign nationals were 1.39% of São Paulo's residents in 2022, and people born abroad were 1.2% of Mexico City's in 2025. Families can compare international schools in São Paulo before choosing an area.4 5
