Living in Curitiba vs São Paulo, who should pick which
The choice turns on where you earn, how much cold you'll accept and how often you fly abroad.
Choose São Paulo if
You earn locally or want the bigger job market, with more than five times Curitiba's salaried workers and higher average pay. You fly to the US or Europe often, and you want the lower violent death rate. Expect higher rent and food bills.
Choose Curitiba if
You want lower rent and food costs, cooler weather and a smaller city, and you work remotely or have a local job. Expect colder, damper winters and a connection on any flight to North America.
Consider Florianópolis if
Low crime figures matter most to you. Santa Catarina had Brazil's lowest violent death rate in 2025, 7.6 per 100,000. Asking rent in Florianópolis was R$61.19 (US$12.26) per m² in August 2026, closer to São Paulo's level than Curitiba's.

In São Paulo, the area matters more than the city average. At FipeZap's August 2026 averages, 35 to 50 m² lists for about R$2,420 to R$4,090 (US$485 to US$820) a month in Vila Mariana, Perdizes, Bela Vista or Paraíso. Condo fees and IPTU property tax come on top. See São Paulo rent prices by area.4

Is Curitiba safer than São Paulo?
No. On official violent death data, São Paulo is the safer of the two, at state level and in city figures.
The Brazilian Forum on Public Security (FBSP) counted 15.5 intentional violent deaths per 100,000 people in Paraná in 2025, about double São Paulo state's 7.8. Both are below Brazil's 19.1. Paraná's rate fell 15.5% from 18.4 in 2024.18
City figures point the same way, though we treat these sources as less certain. An Estadão chart of FBSP data for 2025 puts Curitiba at 16.5 per 100,000 and São Paulo at 7.2, the lowest of any state capital. Preliminary Ministry of Health records for 2025 give Curitiba about 14.8 per 100,000, counting assault deaths and deaths from police interventions.19 20
Death rates don't measure phone theft or burglary. For theft, safer areas and getting home at night, read how safe São Paulo is.

Curitiba vs São Paulo jobs and salaries
São Paulo is the bigger and better-paid job market. Its economy was almost nine times Curitiba's in 2023, and its average formal wage was about 12% higher in 2024.
IBGE counted 5,182,167 salaried workers in São Paulo in 2024 and 950,077 in Curitiba. The average formal wage was R$5,700 (US$1,140) a month in São Paulo and R$5,071 (US$1,020) in Curitiba. GDP per person in 2023 was R$93,156 (US$18,670) in São Paulo and R$67,691 (US$13,570) in Curitiba.7 8 10 45

Volvo has its Brazilian headquarters and plant in the city. Renault's complex in nearby São José dos Pinhais has about 5,000 staff.9 35 36
If you earn abroad, local wages matter less than rent and flights, which favors Curitiba on cost and São Paulo on travel. See jobs and work visas in São Paulo or remote work from São Paulo.
Curitiba public transport vs São Paulo
São Paulo's rapid transit is metro and suburban rail. Curitiba's is busways, which opened in 1974 and became full bus rapid transit (BRT) in 1991.
BRTData lists 7 Curitiba corridors with 74.1 km of system length (a 2016 figure) and 106 stations, carrying about 721,500 riders a day in 2019. The main corridors have center busways, prepaid boarding and raised tube stations. Metropolitan buses integrated with the network charge R$6.00 (US$1.20) cash, and the city sets its own fare.21 22

Curitiba's Afonso Pena airport (CWB) is about 18 km (11 miles) from downtown, a 31-minute drive. In August 2026 it had no nonstops to North America. Its only long-haul link was a TAP flight from Lisbon, returning by way of Rio. Guarulhos had about 4 nonstops a day each to Miami and New York and 2 to London. See São Paulo's metro, buses and airports.28 29 31

Curitiba is Brazil's 8th largest city, with about 1.8 million people on 435 km² (168 sq mi). That's roughly half São Paulo's density.
São Paulo's 11.9 million residents bring more jobs, flights and choice, along with higher rents. Curitiba trades that range for lower costs, cooler weather and a smaller city to learn. Our guide to São Paulo's neighborhoods shows how much daily life varies by area.2 3 46
Curitiba vs São Paulo for expats
Curitiba scores higher on English. EF's 2025 index gave it 556 and São Paulo 518, both above Brazil's 482. São Paulo wins on travel, with about 8 nonstops a day to Miami and New York from Guarulhos in August 2026 and none from Curitiba.31 37
Residency rules are national. The Polícia Federal immigrant ID card is valid across Brazil, and you register at the federal police unit for your address. Same-sex couples have been able to marry anywhere in Brazil since 2013. Start with Brazil visas and residency, and confirm your case with the Polícia Federal or an immigration lawyer.41 42 43

Questions people ask
Is it better to live in Curitiba or São Paulo?
Curitiba is better if you want lower costs, with asking rent about 25% lower per square meter, a cooler climate and a smaller city. São Paulo is better if you earn locally, fly to the US or Europe often or put safety first. Its state recorded half Paraná's violent death rate in 2025.
Is Curitiba cheaper than São Paulo?
Yes. Curitiba's asking rent was R$49.11 (US$9.84) per square meter in August 2026, about 25% below São Paulo's R$65.36 (US$13.10). Its food basket cost R$798.87 (US$160) against R$900.59 (US$180). Average formal wages were about 11% lower in 2024 too, so the gap shrinks if you earn locally.

How much colder is Curitiba than São Paulo?
About 2.6°C (4.7°F) over the year, at 17.8°C (64°F) against 20.4°C (69°F). July lows average 9.3°C (49°F) in Curitiba and 12.8°C (55°F) in São Paulo. Curitiba has 65 days a year with a low of 10°C (50°F) or less, against 14 in São Paulo.
