Brazil bank accounts and money access
Ask the chosen institution to confirm your account type, documents and fees before relying on it for rent or everyday payments.

The short answer
Banco Central describes a nonresident account route at institutions authorized for foreign exchange. Its FAQ says an institution need not open or maintain the account and sets its own fees. A published route does not guarantee acceptance. Prepare identity, migration and fund records, then obtain the chosen bank's actual conditions. Keep conversion fees separate from the guide reference rate.
- Nonresident account access is discretionary for the institution.
- Deposit accounts and prepaid real accounts have different transaction rules.
- A CPF number does not guarantee account approval.
- The dated PTAX quote does not promise your transaction rate.
Which nonresident route is documented?
A nonresident can seek a Brazilian account at an institution authorized for foreign exchange. BCB FAQ 10568 says the institution need not open or maintain the account and sets its own fees.1
Ask whether the institution handles your residence status and the account you need. Obtain its document list and fee schedule before sending money. No account application or bank acceptance has been completed by this editorial research.
Separate deposit and prepaid accounts
BCB FAQ 10568 describes no transaction ceiling for the referenced nonresident deposit accounts. Its prepaid real-account rule instead limits each transaction to about US$19,953 (BRL 100,000). This is a transaction rule for that account type, not a universal account-balance limit.1,
Prepare the correct identity documents
The CPF service accepts Brazilian and foreign individuals, resident and nonresident. Its published route does not require an intermediary.3
Receita Federal FAQ question 4 accepts passports for foreigners resident abroad or in transit. Its Brazil-resident list includes CRNM, specified protocols and other listed documents. Do not apply one identity list to every applicant.4
The paperwork guide owns the CPF application details. Ask the bank for its current identity and compliance requirements. One public-service document list does not prove that every bank accepts the same file.
Which reference rate does this guide use?
The retained October 8, 2026 PTAX selling quote is BRL 5.01190 per US dollar. Buying is BRL 5.01130. These are central-bank reference quotes, not guaranteed customer conversion rates.2
Ask a payment or transfer provider for the amount received after fees. The guide does not promise a card, remittance or cash rate. Tax uses a separate conversion method described in tax residence and foreign income.
