Brazil tax residence and foreign income
Put your migration dates and income records on one timeline before treating an overseas payment as outside Brazilian tax.

The short answer
Receita Federal distinguishes arrival-based residence from a day-count route. Permanent visa holders and temporary visa holders arriving for employment can become tax residents on arrival. Other temporary visa holders have a 184-day test within a period of up to twelve months. The country of your employer does not settle your residence or income treatment. Keep an individual tax calculation outside the city living-cost subtotal.
- Arrival can trigger tax residence for specified visa holders.
- The other temporary-visa route counts 184 days within up to twelve months.
- Foreign earned income can require monthly and annual reporting.
- The guide exchange quote is different from the tax conversion method.
Which date starts tax residence?
Permanent visa holders become tax residents on arrival. Temporary visa holders arriving for employment also become residents on arrival. The rule does not grant every visitor 183 tax-free days.1
Other temporary visa holders become tax residents on their 184th day in a period of up to 12 months, counting consecutive or nonconsecutive days. Earlier permanent status or employment can change the date.1
If the person does not reach 184 days within the counting window, a new window begins from the entry following the entry that started the previous window. Individual travel and authorization records matter.1
Keep your entry and exit records beside every authorization. Ask a Brazilian tax professional to apply the current rules to the actual timeline. The paperwork guide separately covers migration registration.
How should you prepare foreign income?
Taxable foreign-source earned income received by a Brazilian tax resident can require monthly Carnê-Leão payment and annual reporting. Treaty or reciprocal relief must be checked for the source country. Investment-income regimes require separate assessment.2
List salaries, pensions, business receipts and investments separately. Keep payer statements, work locations, receipt dates and foreign tax records. This guide has not classified your income, assessed a treaty or calculated a personal tax bill.
Use the tax conversion method for tax
Receita Federal specifies a separate tax conversion method. Convert the receipt into US dollars at the source-country monetary authority rate, then into reais at the BCB purchase rate for the last working day of the previous month's first half.2
Do not copy the city budget exchange rate into a tax return. The banking guide explains the reference quote used for ordinary guide arithmetic and its limits.
Prepare the file before an assessment
- Travel timelineRecord each arrival, departure and authorization.
- Income listSeparate each payment type and the activity behind it.
- Foreign tax evidenceRetain assessments and receipts for the source country.
- Personal calculationAsk which filing, monthly payment and relief rules apply.
