The short answer
APN lists Laguna de los Tres, Laguna Torre, Laguna Capri, the Cóndores and Águilas viewpoints, and Chorrillo del Salto among northern outings. Their routes and conditions need a current check. Official pages and the older English brochure disagree on some distances. Use the park's visitor center to confirm the actual start point, requirements and an outing that fits your group.
- Ceferino Fonzo Visitor Center is APN's northern information point at the RP 41 entrance.
- Remote trekking and climbing require registration under the current activities page.
- May through September also has a trail-registration requirement.
- Ordinary pets, fires and drones are prohibited under the northern recommendations.
How should you choose an outing?
Northern outings named by APN
| Outing | Planning question |
|---|---|
| Laguna de los Tres | Which start point, route and current conditions fit the group? |
| Laguna Torre | What route and turnaround plan apply to today's conditions? |
| Laguna Capri | Confirm the distance and start point rather than relying on conflicting published figures |
| Cóndores and Águilas viewpoints | Ask about the actual path and access needs |
| Chorrillo del Salto | Confirm the chosen road or walking approach and current access |
APN also describes Reserva Provincial Lago del Desierto as outside the national park. Its provincial status matters when checking the appropriate rules or operator. A regional outing is not evidence about services inside El Chaltén.2

Preview five El Chaltén hikes in this January 2025 guide. Check park rules, weather and trail conditions before choosing a route.
Confirm the trail's start point and distance
The current activities page and linked historical brochure give different figures for some northern routes. They also use different journey directions and possible start points. The brochure's final page says its information was updated in December 2017. Confirm the start point and distance with the park before deciding whether the route suits your group.2,
APN publishes Ceferino Fonzo Visitor Center hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from September 1 to April 30. From May 1 to August 31, it publishes 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The center is at the RP 41 entrance. Confirm current hours before visiting.4
Registration and northern park rules
The current activities page requires registration for climbing and remote-area trekking. It also requires trail registration from May through September. Registration does not establish that a route is clear or appropriate for every visitor.2
Northern recommendations prohibit fires, ordinary pets and drones. Gas cookers are allowed only in permitted camping areas with supervision. Check the current campsite arrangements rather than applying southern picnic-area rules to northern trails.6
APN advises taking water and avoiding natural watercourses as drinking sources. Its northern provisioning points are in El Chaltén. Prepare supplies for the actual outing rather than assuming you can buy them along a route.7
Check admission and conditions separately
Published daily park ticket categories have different eligibility conditions. The living-costs guide lists the dated daily amounts and explains the unresolved seven-day price and age-six wording. Moving to town does not automatically establish a local-resident exemption.1,
APN warns of ice, snow and mud from May through September and prohibits walking or skating on frozen lagoons. See weather for the regional seasonal evidence, then obtain current route advice.6
Plan the next part of your move
- Getting around. Arrange the actual approach and return journey.
- Pets. Keep ordinary pets outside prohibited outings.
- Healthcare. Prepare care and coverage separately.
- Rent. Choose a home for daily life as well as outings.
- Remote work. Separate working hours from excursion plans.
- Moving checklist. Resolve the practical move before arrival.
Questions people ask
Which outings does APN list in northern Los Glaciares?
The current activities page names Laguna de los Tres, Laguna Torre, Laguna Capri, the Cóndores and Águilas viewpoints, and Chorrillo del Salto. Ask the park about current conditions and the actual route before choosing one.
Is the linked English brochure current route guidance?
Its final page says information updated December 2017, despite the 2024 filename. Some figures differ from current APN pages. Use it as historical context and confirm the route with the park.
When do I need to register a northern park outing?
It requires registration for climbing and remote-area trekking, and for trails from May through September. Check the current procedure before the activity. Registration is separate from route conditions.
Can I light a fire or use a gas cooker on northern trails?
APN's northern recommendations prohibit fires. They allow supervised gas cookers only in permitted camp areas. Check the rules for the sector you plan to visit.
Can I drink directly from a park watercourse?
APN advises taking water and avoiding natural watercourses as drinking sources. Its park-wide potable-water statement is not a test of every stream or household tap.
Is Lago del Desierto inside Los Glaciares National Park?
APN describes Reserva Provincial Lago del Desierto as outside the national park. Confirm the rules and access arrangements with the authority or operator for that outing.
