The short answer
The municipal 2026 enrollment notice gives foreign students a clear starting point. It explicitly addresses foreign students, missing school records and temporary missing documents. It also separates the January new-enrollment campaign from transfers during the school year. Start with the actual child's age and stage, ask for the current place and day, then try the complete journey from the proposed home.
- The January 2026 campaign has passed.
- Transfers during the year depend on available places.
- Foreign students receive specific enrollment provisions.
- Full-time education depends on the actual offering.
Our take
Use the current transfer conversation
The official gazette notice of December 12, 2025 set new enrollment for January 12 to 16, 2026, at schools. Those dates are past. Section 4.2 allows transfers during the school year, subject to available places. It begins with an Atestado de Vaga from the intended school, followed by the transfer documentation.1
The education secretariat publishes Avenida 31 de Março, no number, Aeroporto, phone +55 98 3349-1148 and educacao@barreirinhas.ma.gov.br. Its published office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to noon. Ask where to begin for the actual child and address before visiting.2
Prepare the file and explain any gaps
Section 3.2.3 lists the child's identity and CPF or birth certificate, RNE or CRNM or equivalent for foreign students, address proof or a residence declaration, a recent 3-by-4 photo, the responsible adult's identity and CPF, and school records. It also covers relevant disability or developmental documentation and the stated self-declaration form. Ask which originals, copies and equivalents the school will accept.1
The same section states that temporary missing documents do not prevent enrollment. The responsible adult signs the commitment form and has thirty days to regularize them. Explain the actual missing documents rather than delaying the first school conversation.1
Use the provisions for foreign students
Sections 3.2.4 and 3.2.4.1 prohibit discriminatory enrollment mechanisms for migrant, refugee, stateless and asylum-seeking students. When school documentation is absent, the notice provides assessment and placement according to development and age. Early-childhood education and the first year of fundamental education instead follow the age criterion.1
For the 2026 age groups, the notice uses March 31 as the cutoff. It lists nursery groups for ages two and three, preschool groups for four and five, and fundamental education from six. Ask about the actual stage, Portuguese-language support and any record translation or assessment required for your child.1
Settle the whole school day
Section 5 makes full-time places dependent on the actual offering. Section 9 describes specialized educational support in the opposite shift and resource rooms for eligible students. Ask the intended school about its current staffing, support, accessibility, timetable and place rather than assuming every unit offers the same day.1
Try drop-off, pickup, lunch and the journey with the adult who will actually manage them. Ask about any transport, meals, materials and costs, and confirm the language of teaching. Read family life, housing and getting around before choosing the longer home.1,
